What I've Been Reading: Late February 2023

When I severely curtailed my social media use for Lent, I knew I'd need something to fill the void, including what I like to call "floofy books": light, fun reading that inspire me. I've skimmed through a bunch of housekeeping/organizing/decor books, but these are the ones I've read cover to cover and thoroughly enjoyed.

The New Bohemians: Cool and Collected Homes by Justina Blakeney

Justina Blakeney is a lovely stylist and designer, and this book is a showcase of homes decorated in the "boho" style. It's a feast for the eyes, and full of design tips and even some arts and crafts to encourage you to make a space your own.

The language around boho design is definitely fraught: the book contains some outdated dehumanizing terms— including, depending on who you ask, the word "Bohemian" itself when used as an aesthetic descriptor— and some examples of design trinkets that border on or cross the line to cultural appropriation (such as cutesy dream-catchers). It's interesting how the boho design movement itself has brought up questions of cross-cultural sharing, and the best way to do that respectfully.

With all that said, it's still well worth a look for anyone interested in this style for their home, and I quite enjoyed reading it.

Minimalista: Your Step-by-Step Guide to a Better Home, Wardrobe, and Life by Shira Gill

Just when I think I'm so over minimalism, I find myself reading another book written by a woman living in a white home with all-white appliances, and liking it! This book features a lot of down-to-earth, no-nonsense advice about editing, organizing, and maintaining a clutter-free home, and it inspired me to tackle the clutter in my own house with a new eye and some practical tips. Well worth the read.
